How we describe things
Dated where the evidence allows
A period is stated when the object supports it — a mark, a construction method, a documented maker. Where it does not, the entry says the date is not established rather than inventing one.
Condition described, not flattered
Wear, restoration and losses are listed. An antique that has lived a century has marks; pretending otherwise helps nobody at the point of delivery.
Attribution kept apart from fact
Where a piece is “attributed to” or “in the manner of”, it says so on the page. The difference between the two is most of the price.
